After two years, my server crashed last sunday. Of course it was due to the failing Maxtor hard drive. And this is where I must say that all six Maxtor's I've owned, all crashed within two years, with the exception of one, which survived 4 years.
So please people, do not buy a Maxtor. It's a waste of money. Please spend a bit more and buy a much better Western Digital or something! And now I'm going to convert my old maxtor into a nice ashtray :).

Hi Bert,
My Maxtor (60GB) began to die a couple of weeks ago. That is, at boot the BIOS would warn that it is ime to backup and replace the disk.
Sometimes Windoze would chekdisk at startup. The workstation is paid in guilders so at least 7 years old.
Last friday i replaced it with a 320Gb....... Maxtor...
I don't seem to have much problems with Maxtor (I got Debian on another Maxtor, 40Gb) but then again, i don't run a server.
Aru you sure you don't have a cooling problems (I've seen servers with a blanket of dust on the fan outlets...)

I had two small fans (40mm?) at the front of the disk, and one 90mm fan behind it. Which I cleaned sometimes. They were a bit dusty, but that should not be a problem.
A lot of friends of mine had have their problems with Maxtor too. Enough reason to never buy one again.
